Sarah Fund (click here for brochure)
In an effort to support our sisters in their aging years, the Sisters of St. Francis of the Providence of God initiated the Sarah Fund, with an invitation to our friends to help care for our elderly sisters – just as they have cared for so many. As other religious did, many of our sisters worked for minimal compensation and now receive nominal funds from Social Security. Our Sarah Fung brochure illustrates our present circumstances.
Contrary to any assumptions, the Catholic Church, including the local diocese, does not provide monetary support to women religious, nor do they furnish retirement funds. We are greatful to the many who give to the National Retirement Fund for Religious, but our community sees little from this annual collection, whose proceeds are distributed among all religious congregations in need throughout the United States- both men and women's orders. Like many caregivers, it remains the responsibility of our congregation to be the primary provider for the personal needs of our elderly and infirm sisters. Over the last ten years, we have developed a multifaceted approach to funding our retirement needs that includes asset management, targeted development efforts, the effective use of grants and collaboration with local organizations and state as well as federal agencies. Despite these actions, it is still the generosity of our individual donors and benefactors that is supporting our sisters.
We are blessed to care for the needs of our senior sisters who have served all their lives, and we are greatful for the support from our friends and benefactors.
